Wandering Through Vigo

Last month, my husband and I set sail on a two-week cruise to the Canary Islands with P&O Cruises. It was our first time cruising with P&O, as we’re usually loyal Royal Caribbean fans. But this time around, we were after something a little more laid-back and wanted to try out leaving from Southampton.

We had seven stops in total and made a point to hop off at each one for a little exploring. One of those stops was Vigo, Spain.

To our surprise, we arrived just in time for the city’s Reconquista celebrations—a local festival that brings the streets of Vigo to life every March. The event commemorates the city’s victory over French occupation in 1809, and the entire old town transforms into a historical reenactment. Locals dress in 19th-century costume, music fills the air, and the streets are lined with traditional market stalls and live performances.

We didn’t eat out during this stop as there some delicious food on the cruise, but honestly, just being there—soaking up the atmosphere, people-watching, and listening to the sounds of celebration—was such a beautiful way to spend the day. It truly felt like walking through a living postcard.

For our day in Vigo, I opted for my House of Harlow 1960 romper—a piece I picked up a few years ago from TK Maxx. It was one of those in-between weather days: sunny with a slight overcast and quite humid. I was comfortable, but it was funny seeing the contrast—while I was in a light romper and my husband in a shirt sleeve and shorts, the locals were bundled up in full-on winter coats! Clearly, we weren’t feeling the same temperatures.

It’s always interesting how travel makes you rethink how different climates feel depending on where you live!
